The perfect complement for your home and/or garden, made from the resources of Zimbabwean Heritage.
Creative artists express themselves through their beautiful sculptures, and we are able to share their creativity, as we bring you many of their wonderful and unique hand crafted products.
Wood Art
Wood sculptures, including bowls, giraffes and hippos, are hand carved and sculpted from solid pieces of wood, such as mukwa, ironwood, and marula. Each piece is individually crafted and hand polished to reveal astonishing detail, with the most amazing finishes.
Stone Art
Each piece of Stone Art is unique. The creations are crafted from materials such as soapstone, olive stone and leopard stone. We bring many different hand carved and hand polished pieces to the Weldlife Art warehouse.
Metal Art
Metal sculptures are made from scrap steel, such as old drums, scrap cars, roofing, and off-cuts from production machine shops.
The process of making a sculpture can be quite lengthy, depending on its size and intricacy. Some artists work alone and are able to perform all the skills required to make these beautiful creations.
In many cases, a production process is used to create the sculptures. One artist will make the legs and feet, another the feathers, and so on. There are, on average, three or four welders as well as shapers that form the final profiles of the sculptures.
Twisted birds, hedgehogs, lizards, etc., are from off-cuts of sheet metal. Each piece of metal is hand twisted. Each strip is then bent into shape to form part of a sculpture, then spot welded together piece by piece until the animal takes shape. The beaks on the birds are made from old pipes, the legs from scrap steel, and the feathers are created with a hammer, chisel, tin snips or hacksaw. All the resulting components are then bent and welded into place.
The artists who shape the birds spend considerable time studying actual birds' bodies and standing positions in order that they are able to portray the birds as accurately as possible. Once the final sculpture is created, it is varnished. When this process is complete, the sculpture is ready for the user.
Like all metals exposed to the elements, they will need occasional maintenance.
If your sculpture becomes weathered from being outdoors, it can be sprayed with a clear lacquer varnish, or brushed with a thinned-down clear varnish. You do not have to remove the rust as this adds colour and character to the outdoor piece. We have also found spraying the sculpture with "WD40" once a month gives it a protective film, and takes no more than fifteen seconds to apply.
Caution: Care must be taken as sculptures may contain sharp edges. Therefore, they are not recommended in areas where small children may be playing.
For modern decor, sculptures can be spray painted in the colour of your choice. For a more rustic appearance, leave your sculpture untreated.
